Discover Playa Pilar!

Playa Pilar is one of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba, located seven kilometers west of the resort area of Cayo Guillermo. The sand is white, fine and dense enough to facilitate walking. Playa Pilar is a small beach (facing north) extending over 500 meters.

There is a bar and restaurant that offers drinks and meals at reasonable prices such as a succulent lobster lunch for 15 CUC or 18 CUC with extra shrimp. There is also a bathroom nearby the restaurant. The bar opens daily from 12pm to 3 pm.

There are many palapas, shelters and beach chairs for those wishing to stay in the shade. You may rent a beach chair for 2 CUC per day or a beach bed for 10 CUC per day including 3 drinks.

There is no natural shade in Playa Pilar.

They offer a snorkeling excursion in the island facing Playa Pilar called Cayo Media Luna for 25 CUC per person. The snorkeling gears are included, or you may bring your own equipment. Recently they built a beach bar named Cocoloco located few steps from the main footbridge. They offer a variety of cocktails and « Saoco » which is a beverage made of green coconut water mixed with rum and ice cubes. The Saoco was used as a tonic by Cuban slaves, many years ago. It is a typical Caribbean drink.

The site has been improved a lot since our first visit in 2004. From the road, there is now an 130 meter elevated walkway that leads to Playa Pilar. A tower was also constructed to have a nice look of the area. A little further west, There is the nautical club Marlin where you rent many nautical equipments for the day.

Playa Pilar used to be a great place to enjoy an « Au Natural » suntan. It has never been officially designated has a clothing optional beach. Unfortunately it is no longer possible with all the excursionists, Cuban families and the new hotels. Cayo Largo is the most popular island for naturism (20km of pristine beaches) and Cayo Santa Maria (west area of hotel Sol Cayo Santa Maria down to the Melia Buenavista).
